Summer 2012 German Classes – Brenham

The German-Texan Heritage Society offers German language classes for adults in Brenham. All classes are 90 minutes long and meet once a week for 8 weeks. All classes will be held at the A.W. Hodde, Jr., Technical Education Center at 2910 S. Blue Bell Rd, Brenham in Classroom A.

The cost of the summer semester of German I & Intermediate German for adults is $50 for GTHS members and $60 for non-members. The registration deadline for the classes is June 6. Class size is limited, so please register early. Any registrations received after the registration deadline will be subject to a $5 late fee per student.   A registration form can be downloaded at Brenham Summer 2012 Adult Registration Form.

This class concentrates on commonly used words and phrases and their correct pronunciation, using a conversational approach to teaching. No textbook is used, but handouts will be made available. This class is meant for those who know no German or who want to brush up on the basics. Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to pronounce the alphabet and sound out word combinations, read and speak simple phrases, and be able to understand and speak simple sentences, including asking for directions, ordering off the menu, and telling time and general conversation. No prerequisite.

This class is a continuation of the German I class and uses the second half of Taylor’s and Haas’ German: A Self Teaching Guide (available at GTHS for $20). The class emphasizes structure, vocabulary, and conversation and is designed for those who have completed German I or already know some German. Upon completion of twelve weeks of German II, students should be able to participate in a simple conversation using the present, past, subjunctive and future tenses, as well as grasp adjective endings, comparisons of adjectives, and possessive forms. The class will be conducted primarily in German with a focus on speaking practice and vocabulary building. Pre-requisite: German I or equivalent.

Beginning Conversational German

8-week class, 1.5 hours, once a week, no textbook required,
Registration Deadline: June 6, 2012

This class emphasizes vocabulary acquisition, simple conversation, and structure of the German language using online resources. Students will explore online exercises focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the German language. No textbook required, computer and internet access will be provided. No prerequisite, although this course is ideal for previous German I students who would like to review the material before joining the 12-week German II course starting in September.

Intermediate Conversational German

8-week class, 1.5 hours, once a week, no textbook required,

Improve your German while discovering your ancestral heritage. In this course, students will explore the lives of their ancestors through modern research methods. Students will investigate Germany’s geography, culture and history. Students are encouraged to bring a list of their ancestors’ home towns or places of interest to research.  The class will be conducted primarily in German with a focus on verbal skills and vocabulary acquisition. No textbook required, computer and internet access will be provided. Pre-requisite: German I or equivalent
