Summer 2012 Children’s German Classes (Ages 3-14) - Austin
The German Saturday School of Austin offers fun and engaging German language instruction on Saturday mornings in downtown Austin for children ages 3 to 14. There are two 12-week semesters each year, beginning in January and September, plus two 4-week summer programs. Classes run from 9:30 to 11:30 am.
Our teaching staff consists of native German speakers experienced in tutoring children and German teachers from local public schools. Lessons focus on comprehension and speaking for all age groups. Instructors use art, music, and games as well as traditional learning methods.
Our older Mittelschule students (ages 9-13) will use textbooks by the Klett Verlag (Klett Publishing) and will gain skills reading and writing in German. Teaching is done through games, songs and art, as well as through traditional teaching methods. The summer classes will be especially interactive and activity-based, with the focus on learning through creativity and playing.
Samstagsschule classes are organized by the German-Texan Heritage Society (GTHS), a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the German heritage in Texas. Classes are held at GTHS headquarters (the historic German Free School) at 507 East 10th St.
Note: In August 2011 the city of Austin announced that they will charge for parking on downtown city streets during evenings and Saturdays, in addition to Monday – Friday normal business hours. Unfortunately, this will affect students taking classes at the German Free School. There are a number of parking spaces in front of the building on 10th Street, but of course these are First Come-First Served. If you can’t find a spot there, we recommend that you park at the Capitol Visitors Center Parking garage, which is free of charge, and is located only three blocks from the German Free School. We suggest you allow a little extra time for parking so that you can arrive to class on time.
