German Language Classes – Summer Semester 2012

Registration is now open for the 2012 Summer Semester of German language classes for adults in Austin, Brenham and Round Rock. In addition, the Saturday School of Austin (Samstagsschule) will offer German lessons for children ages 3 to 14.

Historic Pfluger Haus hoping to be restored

The Pfluger Haus Foundation will host a lemonade social on Sunday, 3/25, from 2 – 4 pm for anyone interested in helping the restoration efforts. The farmhouse was built in 1875, a two-story house outside town, with enclosed dog-run and made of limestone bricks. It was home to William and Franziska Pfluger and their six children. They’d emigrated to Texas a few year earlier. William was a pillar of the community and the town was named for him. Several generations of Pflugers lived in the home until the family sold it in the 1990s.

In memory – Mary El-Beheri

Founding member, Mary El-Beheri, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. A memorial will be held next Thursday, March 1, at 6:30 PM at the library of MacArthur High School on Bitters Road just off the corner of Nacogdoches Road. Bitters is also called MacArthur View there. Mary taught there for 37 years and considered Mac the base of her vast and legendary accomplishments. Mary’s favorite color was red and is is suggested that everyone will wear something that is red. Click here for an on-line memorial of Mary’s life.

Part-time Teaching Opportunities

The German-Texan Heritage Society (GTHS) is currently seeking teachers to instruct our Saturday children’s classes (Samstagsschule) in San Antonio. Teachers do not need to be certified, but must be proficient German speakers with some teaching or tutoring experience.
